Container Grades at K & K International
Shipping container grades determine the condition, appearance, and appropriate use of every container K&K International sells. Every unit in our inventory is physically inspected before it is offered for sale. Each container is assigned a grade based on its prior use, exterior and interior condition, structural integrity, and suitability for storage, modification, or conversion. This guide explains every grade K&K carries — what it means, what to expect, and which applications each grade is best suited for — so you can make a confident, informed purchase.
Why Container Grades Matter
Not all shipping containers are equal. Two containers that look similar in a photo can have vastly different structural conditions, interior cleanliness, and long-term performance. Buying the wrong grade for your application is one of the most common and costly mistakes buyers make.
K&K’s grading system is straightforward and transparent. There are no vague terms or surprise conditions. When you buy a container from us, you know exactly what you’re getting before it arrives on your property.
New, 1-Trip Containers
Our best condition grade. A new one-trip container has been used exactly once — to ship cargo from its country of manufacture to the United States. It arrives in near-perfect condition with minimal cosmetic wear and no structural damage. These are the cleanest, most reliable containers available.
- Appearance: Minimal to no dings or dents. Paint in exceptional condition. Only minor wear from a single shipment.
- Condition: Wind and watertight. Structurally sound. Seals, doors, and floor in top condition.
- Recommended For: Retail spaces, offices, container homes, high-value storage, or any conversion project requiring a clean, professional appearance.

New, 1-Trip, Cosmetic Blemished
Our second-best condition grade — and one of our best values. These containers have made a single trip, just like a standard one-trip unit. The difference is minor cosmetic damage that occurred during that shipment — areas of denting, scraping, or scuffing on the exterior. There is no structural damage. Performance and integrity are identical to a standard one-trip container.
- Appearance: Minor dings or dents. Interior and exterior paint may show some scraping or scuffing from a single shipment.
- Condition: Wind and watertight. Structurally sound. Seals, doors, and floors in top condition.
- Recommended For: Same applications as standard one-trip — offices, homes, conversions, high-value storage — at a lower price point. Ideal when cosmetic perfection isn’t a priority but structural quality is.
Grade A (Light Use)
Our most popular used container grade. Grade A containers have seen prior use but maintain a very good exterior and interior appearance. They are the best-performing used option for buyers who want maximum reliability from a pre-owned unit. These containers can also be certified for shipping at an additional cost.
- Appearance: Some dings and denting, minor surface rust, and minor repairs. Overall presentation is clean and professional.
- Condition: Wind and watertight. Structurally sound. Seals, doors, and floors in top condition.
- Recommended For: Commercial or residential storage, modification projects, heavy-duty storage applications, and environmentally conscious buyers who want a quality used unit rather than new.

Grade B (Moderate Use)
Our best value used container. Grade B containers show regular wear from multiple shipping cycles — surface rust, moderate denting, some faded paint — but remain wind and watertight and fully functional. These are the go-to choice for buyers who need reliable, weatherproof storage without paying a premium for cosmetic condition.
- Appearance: Noticeable exterior wear — moderate denting, exterior surface rust, some patchwork to steel and/or floor, and possible rippling.
- Condition: Wind and watertight. Structurally sound. All door seals and flooring remain intact. Doors operate smoothly.
- Recommended For: Businesses, contractors, temporary site storage, workshops, overflow inventory, bulk storage, and cost-conscious buyers who need dependable performance without aesthetic requirements.
Grade C (Heavy Wear)
A budget-focused option for tough environments. Grade C containers are structurally sound but display heavy wear from years of active use — extensive rust, deep dents, patched repairs, and significant aging on the exterior. They are wind and watertight for basic storage needs. Appearance is not a selling point, and that’s reflected in the price.
- Appearance: Heavy wear — multiple dents and rippling, extensive rust, significant paint fading, and patchwork repairs to steel and floors.
- Condition: Wind and watertight for basic storage. Floors and doors may show heavy wear but remain functional and secure.
- Recommended For: Construction sites, industrial or remote locations, farm storage, bulk materials storage, or buyers where budget is the primary driver and appearance is irrelevant.

How to Choose the Right Container Grade
The right container grade comes down to three things: what you’re storing, where it will be placed, and what your budget allows.
Choose New 1-Trip or Cosmetic Blemished when the container will be visible — a customer-facing space, a converted office or home, a retail pop-up, or a high-end storage installation where appearance reflects on your brand.
Choose Grade A when you want the best possible used container. Grade A units perform like new in most applications and are a strong choice for buyers who want quality without the new-container price tag.
Choose Grade B for everyday business storage, contractor job sites, and any application where watertight performance matters more than aesthetics. This is K&K’s most-purchased used grade for good reason.
Choose Grade C when budget is the top priority and the container will be placed in a remote, agricultural, or industrial setting where no one is looking at it.

Frequently Asked Questions About Container Grades
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Are all K&K containers wind and watertight? | Yes. Every container K&K sells — from Grade C through new one-trip — is wind and watertight. No exceptions. |
| What’s the difference between Grade A and Grade B? | Grade A has lighter cosmetic wear and is closer to a one-trip unit in appearance. Grade B shows more visible denting, rust, and patchwork but is equally functional for storage. |
| Can I get a Grade C container certified for shipping? | Grade C units are generally not cargo-worthy. Grade A containers can be certified for shipping at an additional cost. |
| Do you have photos of specific units before I buy? | Yes. Contact K&K and we can provide inspection photos of available units before you commit. |
| Which grade is best for a container home build? | New one-trip or Grade A. Cutting openings for windows and doors is cleaner on units with less rust and patchwork. |
| Is a cosmetic blemished container structurally the same as a standard one-trip? | Yes — the only difference is minor cosmetic damage on the exterior. Structural integrity, seals, doors, and floor condition are identical. |
